Image: Volupte Music for Viola and Piano by Charles Kœchlin and Joseph Jongen

Music for Viola and Piano by Charles Kœchlin and Joseph Jongen - Roger Benedict (viola) and Timothy Young (piano) with guest artist Ben Jacks (horn).

Kœchlin’s mighty viola sonata bleeds with the tragedy of war-time horror. It is unexpectedly gripping for a work written for the seemingly polite ensemble of viola and piano.  His skill with textures, harmony and colour creates a piece of enormous emotional impact, from its initial numb desolation through cries of anguish then the desperate morse-code tap-tapping of its moto-perpetuo. Listening to this piece is a truly remarkable emotional journey.

The Violist Roger Benedict enjoys an international career as one of the finest musicians of his generation. His wide-ranging performances have included work as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player, teacher and conductor. Roger joined the London Philharmonic at age 22 and became Principal Viola of the Philharmonia Orchestra at 29. Through these orchestras Roger worked under the roster of the greatest conducting luminaries of his time.

In 2002 Roger moved to Australia to become Principal Viola with Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He performs every year as guest principal viola with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Roger Benedict is a leading chamber musician. His chamber partners have included musicians Sir Simon Rattle, Lorin Maazel, Leif Ove Andsnes, Julian Lloyd Webber and Osian Ellis. He has given recitals at Wigmore Hall and the Purcell Room.

Roger is one of the driving forces in Australian music, both as performer – he is Australia’s busiest violist – and teacher. He is a passionate advocate for music education, working with many young artists.

"The whole performance of this wonderful work is a delight, and one would be hard pressed to identify any finer version from the many CD recordings available."

Music of Vierne and Chausson - Steve Davislim, The Queensland Orchestra and Guillaume Tourniaire

Gramophone (UK) (December 2009)
"This was a complete surprise to me and left me fairly stunned. Who knew that Louis Vierne, thought of (by me, at any rate) as an elegant rather than sensationalist composer, could deliver such high drama as features here? Guillaume Tourniaire, his Queensland forces and Steve Davislim—and not least fabulous sound from Melba Records—turn this into a sonic blockbuster in every way." 'Editor's Choice'
