"[Helpmann award] highlights included cellists, the Ng twins, performing composer Elena Kats-Chernin’s Courting the Dragon. If we are talking ‘art’, this was the high point of the night." James Waites - Australian Stage Online "Phoenix Story for two cellos, a new commission from Elena Kats-Chernin... its repeated motifs and themes with vaguely oriental flavour invited rapt contemplation of the sheer beauty of two beautiful instruments beautifully played." Elizabeth Silsbury - The Advertiser "These artists are at a level few achieve... they commit to their cellos in an almost ecstatic state, eyes closed, expressing everything through their instruments." Penelope Debelle - The Age "Elena Kats-Chernin provides an intriguing counter balance to two super-Romantic pieces with her Phoenix Story, the title piece of this disc... Tong accompanies and shares the structural weighting in equal measure with the soloists... The three artists are still in their mid-20s yet play with virtuosic insights. **** (4 stars)" Noel Mengel - Courier Mail To much acclaim, Melba's new recording artists, the Adelaide-born Ng brothers - Pei-Jee and Pei-Sian - completed their first extensive Australian tour in 2007. Performing alongside established Melba artist, pianist David Tong, the twin cellists featured the world premiere of a new work by Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin alongside music by Chopin and Rachmaninov. Supporting young, talented musicians such as the Ng brothers and David Tong, and offering them the most international of platforms in dedicated, state-of-the-art recordings has been a vital part of Melba’s mission since the label was launched in 2000. Phoenix Story is no exception: recorded following the trio's tour, it combines superb performances with all the benefits of direct stream digital technology and the stunning visual artistry of Ken Cato. A feast for all the senses! 'Phoenix Story' is supported by The Ian Potter Foundation and the Australia Council.
