 Elizabeth Campbell - Mezzo Soprano Elizabeth Campbell is one of Australia’s most distinguished mezzo sopranos. She graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and furthered her studies in London and Europe. She was a finalist in the Munich International Competition and winner of the Elly Ameling Lieder Prize in the Hertogenbosch Singing Competition and represented Australia in the Singer of the World Competition in Cardiff. In 1997 she was awarded the Bayreuth Scholarship. Internationally she has performed Messiah at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, toured the USA with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and given recitals at the Wigmore Hall and in Den Haag and Antwerp. Elizabeth Campbell made her operatic debut as Carmen with the West Australian Opera in 1983 and since then has featured regularly with the state companies and Opera Australia. Her extensive operatic repertoire includes leading roles in Cosi fan Tutte, Eugene Onegin, Carmen, Xerxes, Giulio Cesare, Alcina, La Clemenza di Tito, Boris Godunov, Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg, Les Troyens, Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Werther, Hansel and Gretel, La Forza del Destino, Il Trovatore, Madama Butterfly, Lulu, Peter Grimes, Die Fledermaus, the Ring cycle, Capriccio, Rigoletto, Andréa Chénier, The Turn of the Screw, Dead Man Walking (for which she won a Helpmann award) and the world premières of Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, Batavia, Lindy and most recently, The Love of the Nightingale. Elizabeth Campbell is one of Australia's leading concert artists and recitalists, appearing frequently with all the leading symphony orchestras, choirs, and festivals. She has a wide repertoire which includes works by many contemporary Australian composers including Graeme Koehne, Peter Sculthorpe, Richard Mills and Ross Edwards. Recent seasons have seen Elizabeth perform roles in The Rake’s Progress, Rusalka and Il Trittico for Opera Australia, Fenena in Nabucco for State Opera of South Australia, Niobe in Richard Mills’ new opera The Love of the Nightingale in Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne, Cecilia in Little Women for State Opera of South Australia, ‘A Night at The Opera’ with Sydney Philharmonia, Mrs De Rocher in Dead Man Walking in Sydney, and Messiah with Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. During 2008 Elizabeth appeared in workshops of Gordon Kerry’s new work Ingkata for the Adelaide Festival, a Wagner Gala with West Australian Symphony Orchestra, the Durufle Requiem with Sydney Philharmonia, the role of Arnalta in L’Incoronazione di Poppea for Victorian Opera, Marcellina in The Marriage of Figaro and Maddelena in Rigoletto, both for State Opera of South Australia. In 2009 Elizabeth’s engagements will include the roles of Amneris in Aida and Mrs Sedley in Peter Grimes, both for Opera Australia, Antonia’s mother in The Tales of Hoffmann for State Opera of South Australia, the premiere performances of Richard Mills’ St Mark Passion with WASO, TSO and TQO and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Australian Youth Orchestra at the Adelaide Festival Theatre.
