This is a superlative disc featuring 16 exquisite songs from early, middle, and late in a long and fecund career, one scene from the transcendent final opera plus one brilliant Waltz Suite from the most popular opera all by the last great German Romantic: Richard Strauss.

Australian tenor Steve Davislim is robust and luxurious, able to emote in “Morgen” and ravish in “Traum durch die Dämmerung.” Conductor Simone Young supports in “Waldseligkeit” and challenges in “Befreit,” and the powerful but subtle State Orchestra of Victoria plays with a blended tone and elegant ensemble ideally matched to the character of the music.

This is one of the loveliest Strauss discs to come along in many years – and anyone who enjoys the composer’s way with words and music shouldn’t miss it.
