Scott Davie (piano), Melba Recordings Graeme Murphy's dancework Grand, seen in Melbourne recently, was all about the piano and, by default, all about his mother, whose "sweet touch on the keyboard set my baby feet dancing". This CD, from the enterprising Melba Recordings label, is the "soundtrack" of the ballet, played persuasively, beguilingly, by Scott Davie. The 18 items range from the opening Aria from J.S.Bach's Goldberg Variations to short pieces or excerpts by Beethoven, Gershwin, Liszt, Ravel, and Ligeti, Villa-Lobos, Ginastera and Fats Waller. It is a marvelously effective mosaic of movement and lyricism that is perfect to listen to on long journeys or on a cold night.
