..Seduction,  an anthology of Richard Strauss songs from the splendid young Australian tenor, Steve Davislim.  There is nothing uncommitted in Davislim’s ardent singing. Strauss wrote several of these songs for his wife, the soprano Pauline de Ahna, but they are very apt, indeed, for a tenor and it was especially moving to encounter the resigned eloquence of Allerseelen (All Souls Day) on that very feast day last week.

Davislim has a ringing heroic sound in Heimliche Aufforderung, a light texture with a radiant final line in Staendchen, while in Befreit (Simone Young is his very assured collaborator throughout, conducting the State Orchestra of Victoria) the orchestral part is the murmuring of the heart under the tenor’s other worldly reverie.
