Ben Jacks (Horn)

Ben Jacks is one of the leading horn soloists of his generation. He was born in Hobart in 1975 and studied at the University of Western Australia under Heidi Kepper. Further studies were completed with Dale Clevenger and Gail Williams in Chicago, Stefan Dohr in Berlin, Professor Erich Penzel in Cologne and Hector McDonald in Vienna.

Ben was appointed as Principal Horn in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 2000. Ben has performed with every orchestra in Australia—with the Tasmanian, Adelaide, Queensland and Melbourne orchestras and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra in Sydney. Ben performs internationally as guest Principal Horn with the Malaysian Philharmonic and Ensemble Kanazawa in Japan.

Ben Jacks has a busy solo career performing in recitals, brass quintets and as soloist with Australian orchestras. Ben has frequently performed Schumann's demanding Concertstück for four horns to great acclaim. Ben's celebrated debut CD for Melba, Rhapsodie: Fantasie: Poème features Barry Tuckwell as conductor with The Queensland Orchestra.  Ben Jacks is in demand as a teacher and has tutored for the Australian Youth Orchestra and works as Horn Lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Rhapsodie: Fantasie: Poème MR301117 ‘The young horn player Ben Jacks succeeds in inhabiting each score with passion, intelligence and poetry. His technique works wonders in the most virtuoso passages, and one is amazed at the colours his instrument reveals. This is a great moment for concerto music.’  Opus Haute Définition (France)
