Sublime Mozart

03/06/2009
Opus Haute Définition (France)
Jean-Jacques Millo

Entitled Sublime Mozart, this SACD brings together two ‘sublime’ works: the Clarinet Concerto in A, K622 dating from 1791 and the Clarinet Quintet in A, K581 from 1789. As Robert Levin has remarked, the anthropomorphic qualities of Mozart’s solo concertos invite comparisons with his concert and opera arias. The two forms illustrate, in effect, Mozart’s genius in creating his character portraits, where he unites virtuosity with dramatic expression. In both genres he employs a prodigious melodic invention, an enormously fluid rhythmic language and a voluptuous orchestral fabric. And these are the very interpretive emphases that we find here under the inspired baton of conductor Guillaume Tourniaire. He accompanies with supple precision the equally inspired, lofty clarinet of Paul Dean. The Clarinet Quintet is in the same vein with appropriate phrasing … this SACD is a little marvel of which one must also praise the quality presentation.
