Whether by design or not, the Benaud Trio's collection of contemporary Australian piano trios begins with what is easily the most impressive of the four –Ross Edwards' 1998 work. It opens with the piano exploring one of Janáček's overgrown paths, before gently coaxing the violin and cello into a relaxed neo-romantic conversation. Even in the energy of the skirling, folksy third and final movement, the music never really loses touch with that nostalgic autumnal world, which the Benauds explore so sensitively. The rest of their disc is just as capably played . . .
