The Virtuoso Piano Music of George Frederick Boyle

La Lettre du Musicien (France)

Threatened a bit by the loss of funding, the Australian label Melba Recordings seems to have emerged from this crisis and has issued two new recordings.

Few people would know George Frederick Boyle (1886-1948), the composer born in Sydney and who made his career in the United States, writing works for orchestra, two cantatas, chamber music and piano pieces. The young Timothy Young has recorded – in this world premiere – some of those works marked with virtuosity and late romantic inspiration (Ballade, 1921) and of ample proportions (Sonata, 1915). Other pieces, on the contrary – like the Five Piano Pieces of 1921 – are works of great delicacy.

The Australian company has also released a CD by the Israeli pianist Asher Fisch devoted to the Liszt paraphrases of Wagner.
