Timothy Young is one of Australia's leading pianists, renowned for his vital chamber music and recital performances. The list of his musical collaborations reads like a who's who of international musicians. A sensational soloist in his own right, he effortlessly balances virtuosity, musical creativity and a sixth-sense for ensemble. Tim is a founding member of Melbourne's thriving Ensemble Liaison and has several important recording projects in the pipeline with Melba.
Timothy received his Bachelor of Music at the University of Melbourne with first class honours and then continued his studies in Europe, receiving his Diploma with a rarely awarded distinction from the Ministry of Education and as dux of his year at the Nicolò Paganini Conservatorium in Genova, Italy.
A first-prize winner of piano and chamber music competitions including the Premio Kawai, Tortona; the Palma d’Oro, Finale Ligure; and, as part of a trio, the first Chamber Music Competition of Liguria, Timothy has performed in concert extensively throughout Italy for almost a decade. He was invited to perform works by Luciano Berio in the composer’s presence and was a member of contemporary music ensembles Orfeo and Aulodia. He performed in numerous festivals including Chiavari, Bordighera, Ravello and the Accademia Chigiana in Siena.
On his return to Australia, Timothy has appeared at the Australian National Academy of Music Autumn Music Festival; Queensland Biennial Festival of Music; the Melbourne International Arts Festival; Port Fairy (Victoria); Music in the Round at Monash University; the Utzon Room music series at the Sydney Opera House and the Perth Concert Hall Summer Series. He has performed in recital with Alexander Baillie, Howard Penny, Wanda Wilkomirska, Daniel Kossov, Tanya Prochazka, Peter Exton, William Hennessy, Philippe Muller, Michael Goldschlager, Oleh Krysa, Rudolf Koelman, Suren Bagratuni, Patricia Pollett, Caroline Henbest, Brett Dean, Paul Neubauer, Andrea Darzins, John Harle, Paul Rozcek, John Harding, Csaba Erdélyi, Howard Davis, Ma Xiaohui, Mats Lidström, Alexander Ivashkin, David Pereira, Geoffrey Collins, Hansjorg Schellenberger, the Griffith Trio, the Australia Ensemble and Ensemble Liaison.Timothy has been a guest lecturer at the University of Melbourne, Faculty of Music; the Victorian College of the Arts; Griffith University, Brisbane and has taught and lectured at the Australian Institute of Music, Sydney.
Timothy Young is a Resident Artist and Coordinator of Piano at the Australian National Academy of Music.
